NEW OH&S POSTER CAMPAIGN
Extensive research conducted by the Melbourne Metropolitan Fire Brigade has established that atmospheres in the post fire stage are highly dangerous.
Firefighters should never go into the scene of a fire without full respiratory protection. Extreme caution should be taken to avoid the mix of toxic gases and airborne particles that are present for many hours after a fire has been extinguished.
The UFU is pushing for presumptive legislation in relation to the industry of firefighting. Presumptive legislation exists in most of North America. It means that cancer and heart disease in firefighters are both automatically accepted as compensible insofar as workers compensation is concerned.
However, workers compensation is by definition retrospective in nature. Occupational health and safety is about preventing workplace illness and accidents from occuring in the first place.
